A. When the owner of a firearm cannot be located by reference to the serial number on it or by means of any other information available to the police department, then the weapon may be disposed of in accordance with the following procedures:

1. After exhaustion of the efforts to locate the firearm’s owner and more than six months have passed since the firearm was seized or abandoned, the police department may trade or exchange said weapon for additional police equipment.

a. No trade or exchange shall be made without the express approval of the city manager.

b. The police chief shall certify that the serial number has been traced without finding an owner and that the whereabouts of the last owner is unknown. (Ord. 4175 §1, 1982).
